Web hosting customers at NameISP can free of charge choose to filter their emails through a virus scanner and a spam filter before the final delivery to their POP3 account.
We use a virusscanner called ClamAV which is Open Source software. Our virus definition is being updated 6 times per day. Usually ClamAV is several hours before the "large" antivirus companies with finding new viruses.
Our spam filter, SpamAssassin, is without a doubt the most powerful protection available against unwanted email (spam). We also use ORDB and SpamHaus to block mail servers which are "Open Relay".
The spam filter works by performing a series of tests on each message before it is delivered to the customer. For each positive test the spam score increases and if the total spam score is above the accepted tolerance level the message will be deleted. It is up to the individual customer to set the tolerance level.
Our experiences show that the filter effectively removes 99% of all spam. In order to avoid so called "false positives" (real messages wrongly identified as spam) we recommend that you do not choose the strictest tolerance level (Trigger Happy). Choosing Normal is usually enough for most people.
