 On Friday March 18, 2011 the .XXX Top-Level-Domain received final approval through ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). The approval grants the .XXX web suffix with the same rights as .com, .net, .info and other TLDs. The only difference being that as a sponsored TLD (sTLD), .XXX domains will only be available to the adult entertainment industry. The registration agreement will require anyone registering a .XXX domain to complete an application process, which will be endorsed and overseen by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR).
The introduction of .XXX provides numerous benefits. For consumers who wish to browse adult entertainment sites, it provides reassurance they are more protected from the risk of viruses, identity theft, credit card fraud and inadvertent exposure to child abuse images. It will also provide individuals and parents who wish to avoid adult entertainment sites the opportunity to filter out unwanted .XXX material.
* Sunrise (September 7, 2011)
There will be two concurrent tracks (A and B) within the Sunrise period for .XXX Domains.
Sunrise A - for members of the Sponsored Community with verifiable trademark rights AND/OR owners of exact matching strings in other IANA TLDs. Sunrise A has priority over Sunrise B. And multiple applications will be resolved in a closed auction. All gTLDs and ccTLDs qualify for Sunrise A (grandfathering) participation. All strings must have been registered prior to February 2010.
Sunrise B - for non-members of the Sponsored Community with verifiable trademark rights who wish to block their name in the .XXX sTLD
* Landrush (November 8, 2011) - More detail yet to be provided. However, Landrush is reserved for members of the Sponsored Community. Also multiple applications will be resolved in a closed auction.
* General Availabitliy (December 6, 2011) - Anyone can register .XXX domains in this phase of the launch. Domains will remain inactive until the registrant has created a membership account.
Important! Note that:
* Connected domain names in Sunrise A must be registered before 2010-02-01.
* Connected trademarks in Sunrise B must be registered before 2011-09-01.
"Best Business Practices" - requirements for .XXX Domains:
Developed by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR), all .XXX registrants will be contractually obliged to follow a set of practices draw up to provide effective self-regulation of the adult industry. In particular they are:
- Safeguard children from being marketed or targeted online.
- Defend customer privacy.
- Use and promote accurate labeling and meta-tagging.
- Ensure clear and accurate disclosures, security of transactions and contact information.
- Protect intellectual property rights.
- Combat the use of unlawful malicious codes and technologies (e.g., spoofing).
- Oppose fraudulent, anonymous and unsolicited bulk SPAM advertising adult entertainment.
IFFOR will preserve the credibility of these practices through regular revisions and updates to accommodate developments in technologies and societal expectations.
